Medicare is the health arm of Social Security and provides a good baseline health benefit for Seniors. Medicare Supplements, however, provides coverage for the gaps in the Medicare system and Medicare Supplements are often referred to as “Medigap” policies. Gaps in base Medicare coverage include deductibles for various items, as well as the 20% or more difference that can exist between what Medicare will pay for a given procedure or treatment and what a provider will actually bill. Supplemental coverage is designed to fill in those gaps that exist.
What is refreshing in the Medicare Supplement market is that these plans are standard and provide identical coverage when compared from one carrier to another. For example, Plan F is generally considered the most comprehensive supplement plan available on today’s market. Plan F also represents about 85% of all Medicare Supplement policies sold today.
